My long week-end was better then your long week-end… Why you may ask? Because I got to spend it with Lisa & Devin and their family and friends at Temple’s Sugar Bush! And what an amazing day we had. First of all, I wasn’t worried about these two being in front of my camera because their engagement shoot was absolutely perfect so I knew they’d rock their wedding photos too. No what worried me leading up to the day was the weather (note to self, take own advice and don’t look at the weather leading up to a wedding haha). The days leading up to, the forecast was 15-20mm of rain and just an absolute bust of a day which had me worried because we were doing the first look and majority of the photos in Perth and then the ceremony was going to be outdoors at Temple’s Sugar Bush. To my surprise I woke up to a gorgeous sunny day calling for 20+ degree weather, how lucky were we? I made my way over to the girls at the Holiday Inn Kanata while Carley, my second shooter, made her way over to the guys. I arrived to the hotel room with the girls about 90% ready. Lisa was in the middle of getting her hair done while the others got finishing touches on their makeup. She seemed excited but so calm about it all which is super rare to see and she told me she’d had a good night’s sleep, which is again, rare. I saw her dress and was just in awe, she chose so damn good! I couldn’t wait to see her put it on, I already know how stunning Lisa is but I also knew she’d make an absolutely stunning bride in that dress. I got to work on some detail shots of their beautiful invites, rings and super cute wooden ring box. We also got to play with the makeup artists super cool ring light and get some beautiful portraits of these ladies before they got dressed. After a quick shot in their robes on the bed and sneaking the girls away into the bathroom, it was time to get our bride in her dress. Before putting it on however, we opted to do a little sexy shoot in some white lingerie and Lisa’s absolutely gorgeous veil (made by Devin’s aunts). But those are for Lisa & Devin’s eyes only ;). Lisa’s mum, Edith, helped her little girl in her dress as they had a moment together before an impromptu first look with the girls. I snuck them out of the bathroom with their eyes closed as they waited for the reveal. They opened their eyes and couldn’t contain how in awe they were of their best friend. So much so that Andrea actually started crying and had to tilt her head back so as to not ruin her makeup haha! After a quick loading up of the cars we made our way to Perth to get Lisa & Devin’s first look done!
We arrived in Perth and it was Sunny and perfect out. Devin and his crew were already waiting by the bridge with my second shooter (thanks for getting them there on time Carley) which made the whole thing go so smoothly. We found some shade under a willow tree and placed Devin facing away from Lisa as she made her way over. A little placing of her dress and veil and it was time to let her go see her soon to be husband. When she tapped Devin’s shoulder and he turned, it’s like he didn’t know how to react. I think more than anything he was a)happy to see Lisa. b)In absolute awe of just how beautiful she was. And c) overwhelmed by the moment. She smiled and took him in for a kiss. He stared at her and teared up, but never letting those tears actually roll down his cheeks. It was so sweet and beautiful to watch. I LOVE FIRST LOOKS! After a few minutes of them talking about their morning and a few shots under the tree, we gathered up the wedding party and made our way around Stewart Park to pump out some photos. We honestly had such a good time doing these. Not only was the dynamic of this group wonderful but their genuine interactions with each other was too. Even when I made them fake laugh, it was all so real haha! During the individual portraits we even got photobombed by another wedding party member from another group getting their wedding photos taken at the park. I ignored him and kept on with what I was doing but Carley managed to get a shot of him acting like a fool. I stole Lisa & Devin away while the wedding party ate some snacks to go take a picture by an old wooden fence. As per usual, these two were total naturals and kept laughing and smiling and then I looked at Devin and asked him what he was saying, and of course his response was ”Fart”. I just about died. During their engagement session I asked him to whisper something funny into Lisa’s ear to get her to laugh and the first thing that came to mind was, FART. We’ve definitely held onto that one as our inside joke :). Any who, we made our way over to the Rocks down in the stream where Lisa gladly popped her shoes off and walked through and over the rocks like a champ. Got a few more shots in, popped some champagne, wedding party finished off the bottle while we finished off our session and finally it was time to make our way to Temple’s to get these two married.
We arrived at Temple’s at the same time as guests so Lisa had to run and hide in the new Bridal suite (yaaaassss Temple’s!!). The had both indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces ready just in case it rained but the forecast was calling for sunny with some clouds and no rain anywhere on the radar so it was definitely going to go ahead with the outdoor option. Carley made her way around taking candids of guests while I popped up to see Lisa and get her first look with her father done. Dave, her dad, made his way up and opened the curtain and it was instant teary eyes. He held his hands up to his face and walked over to hug his little girl. Them embraced for what seemed like forever because time honestly stood still in that moment. They eventually got out of the embrace and Dave just looked at her, his little girl was getting married. They both cried and wiped away each others tears. Lisa then gifted him with his tie and handkerchief which had a special little message on it. She read it out loud to him: ” To my father, Of all the walks we’ve taken together, this will be the one I remember forever. Today I am a Bride, tomorrow a Wife, but I’m always your little girl for life. Love, your daughter.” I myself don’t often cry at weddings anymore but this moment between father and daughter got me to tear up. It was just so special. They cried some more and embraced again and after a quick touch up for makeup it was time to walk Lisa down the aisle.
As we waited for the precessional to start, the guests and I looked at the sky realizing how dark it was in the near distance so I quickly whipped out my phone to check the radar. Nope, clear skies and no rain in the forecast, we’d be fine. Devin made his way down, to STAR WARS no less! I was laughing so hard internally, of course he would walk down to Star Wars music. He greeted the bridal party as they made their way down the aisle and then quietly, with much anticipation, waited for his bride to make her way down. His eyes got large and teared up immediately as she came into view. Kyle, his best man tapped him on the back and held onto him with a big smile helping ease his nerves. Lisa turned the corner and her eyes also welled up with tears as she held onto her mom and dad. I also have to say that she walked in to the tune of ”Can’t help falling in love” by Kina Grannis (from the soundtrack of Crazy Rich Asians) and I was swaying to the song, what a perfect choice and as a bonus I absolutely love this version. The ceremony was going so well, we’d gotten the opening words in and even were able to get their vows in and then it drizzled, which was fine. But within a minute of the drizzle, the downpour commenced! I ran to the back and grabbed an umbrella and someone quickly handed me another one which I gave to Kyle and Justine so they could hold them over the Bride and Groom. The officiant did an amazing job at quickly pronouncing them husband and wife and allowing them to get in a kiss before everybody booked it inside! When we got inside I checked the radar again… according to it, there was currently no rain in our location or anywhere near us. Weather network, you’ve failed us! We had a good laugh at that. The staff were almost done setting up the room for the reception so we quickly made the decision to put away the head table, invite guests to find their seats and to proceed with the ceremony in the space as it was. They exchanged rings with big smiles on their faces and signed their official documents (Devin and the witnesses having much rain on their jackets) while Devin’s aunt sang a song she wrote specially for them. It really was quite beautiful. They were OFFICIALLY husband and wife now and had their true first kiss and in true Devin fashion, raised their arms in triumph in front of all their guests. They boogied their way out of the reception space to go find their puppers, Rylee, who was waiting very eagerly for her mom and dad.
Rylee was so good at taking pictures, mom and dad were definitely proud. As we went out to get the photos with Rylee the rain actually stopped and the sky cleared! Like full on sun with just a wee bit of clouds, it was perfect. We made our way back to the ceremony space to get family photos done before continuing on with the bridal party. I decided for the last shot of everyone together we should do something fun and they were totally down to jump and be crazy so that’s what we opted to do. And what an interesting moment it was. The first try was alright but I wanted more energy, and honestly this shot usually takes a couple tries so we went in for round two. Kyle decided to give his all and did a move pretty close to the cheerleading move ”Toe Touch” but with his arm punched down rather than touching his toes… It was in this moment that Kyle realized he made a mistake. When they landed I looked at the back of my camera and said let’s try it one more time and that’s when I saw Kyle not moving. He said ”I said it before the jump, I said I would rip my pants, I did.” And just like that, we all burst out laughing. Right down the seem, top the bottom, his pants were finished. Devin couldn’t believe it and just held onto Kyle’s shoulders and dug his head in, he was laughing so hard, I think we all are. Luckily the bridal party was done and Kyle had a pair of black pants with him so he made his way over to get changed while I finished things up with Lisa & Devin. The sun came out in perfect force for these last daytime shots (THANK YOU MOTHER NATURE). Lisa & Devin held each other and just like the pros they are, I didn’t have to give them any direction. I couldn’t have been more happy with how these turned out. We made our way to the front of Temple’s to get a final shot of the wedding party and ultimately of all the guests as well.
** NOTE** I was on a step ladder for this shot, albeit small, (which I am terrified of) and right on the shoulder of the road which has a curve right before where we were and cars come in fast. I was terrified for my life but we made it work haha!
The decor for this space was fabulous. Lisa & Devin brought in a ton of signage with cute quotes and some of their favourite sayings as well as personal images from their engagement shoot (holla at your girl!) and a super cute album detailing their life together in photos. The cake was absolutely stunning and was created by Justine, the Maid of Honour!! Mad skills to this baker for sure. The party favours were perfect and very Canadian, Maple Syrup made right here at Temple’s. Like I said, perfect! The wedding party made their Grand Entrance, with our Bride and Groom soaking it all in (especially Devin with those dance moves). Lisa guided her husband to their table and as quickly as they got there, the guests were already cheering for them to kiss, and so they did! Their MC introduced the kissing game which guests had to come up and roll the dice. If it landed on a 1 or a 6, the couple had to kiss. If it was any other the number, they had to go and kiss as many people as the number they rolled. Of course the wedding party got all the kisses in the end. Proof being when Lisa’s dad went up and rolled, I believe it was a 4 our 5, he kissed the beautiful bridesmaids on their cheeks and then proceed to kiss his little girl and of course Devin. And then he head locked him into a hug! It was so fun to watch guests come up and try their luck. During the night they also announced they they are lovers of puns and if guests had a pun to tell, they could come up to the mic, tell their pun and the bride and groom would kiss. There were many funny ones and even if they weren’t that funny, the vibes of the party made it funny so there were many many kisses.
Lisa & Devin made their way into their first dance and it was as beautiful as you could have expected. They swayed away to ”You make it easy” By: Jason Aldean and it was utterly romantic as they leaned into each other and Lisa sang a few of the lyrics. But mostly it was just beautiful for them to have a moment with each other. The father daughter dance was just as beautiful as dad held onto his little girl and smiled, and cried as he carried her across the dance floor. There’s just something about a father daughter dance that always gets to me, this one was no different. And of course we ended our first dances off with the Mother son dance where Devin’s mom was just all smiles as she danced with her not so little boy. The party got started pretty much immediately after the first dances were complete. And what a dance party it was! This crew definitely knew how to tear up a dance floor. From screaming to the skies to some Bon Jovi, to disco, to Bruno Mars, they danced to absolutely everything and I had such an amazing time joining them on the dance floor. I quickly ran outside to get a shot of Devin, his dad and his Groomsmen⁄groomswoman smoking on some cigars and I just couldn’t help but to laugh. They were trying so hard to puff on these and get all the smoke in the air to make for a cool shot and it just wasn’t happening so Emma’s sister Gabby and her wife made their way over and helped a)light the cigars to begin with and b) puff out as much smoke as they could, they were total rockstars. In the end though Devin and everyone else got the smoke flowing and we ended up with a pretty sweet shot. We quickly returned to the dance floor where Lisa’s sister-in-law graced us with a beautiful rendition of Norah Jones’- Don’t know Why. It really was quite beautiful as Lisa danced with her Brother. After some quick cake cutting photos and an outdoor photo of our bride and groom I ended things partying up on the dance floor, where my dancing feet and karaoke-ing heart belong.
I couldn’t have asked for a better way to have spent my long week-end to be honest. I had photographed another 10 hour wedding the day before but that didn’t stop me from putting my heart and soul into Lisa & Devin’s wedding and I am honestly so so soooooo grateful to have been able to have spent the day with them. I say it often and I truly do mean it, I have the absolute best clients and these two are officially at the top of that list. Devin, never stop being you. Keep smiling and being your funny self. To Lisa, of course never stop being you but continue to share your beauty and spirit with this world because more people need to be like you. I know the rest of your night was amazing since we talked the very next day haha! But I wish you guys all the best and can’t wait to meet up with you guys for some coffee and maybe even a Gym date, right Lisa? xoxox
